The planet’s oceans are home to vast expanses of underwater life. And flying above them is a group of animals that specialise in getting their daily food from the surface: sea birds. Spending most of their life at sea, they rest on its surface, feed on plankton and fish and embark on extraordinary migrations that win the admiration of all birdwatchers.

The sea bird populations that reproduce in northern Europe (Scotland, Iceland, Norway, etc.) begin their migratory journey towards the southwest in mid-August, a postnuptial passage which goes on until mid-November. The narrow Cantabrian continental shelf means that many of these birds fly near the coast during this period of the year.

Aves Cantábricas organises guided boat tours at this time of year. Setting out from the town of Laredo, they cover around 10-12 miles of the coastline. The boat takes groups of 6 people plus a specialist guide and the vessel skipper. The trips last for 6 hours.
